Project Overview

The opportunity

UMC approached Hansen Belyea with an incredible opportunity to document a project that is not only a significant milestone for the company and their partner, Corix, but also has tremendous implications for the Pacific Northwest region and beyond.

This past spring, UMC was actively constructing a new Energy Utility District in the Downtown Bellingham Waterfront District in Washington state. This new energy utility district was developed through a collaboration between UMC and Corix. The project will undoubtedly transform the community’s access to green energy and contribute to the ongoing efforts to increase public access to the waterfront with new businesses, housing, and recreational areas.

UMC contracted us to shoot and produce a 5-minute video that captures what this project means for the community, the people involved in its construction, and the environment.

Saving Time, Energy and Money

Maximizing your investment with partners

During our shoot planning with UMC, their partner, Corix, expressed interest in using the footage for their own cut to tell their story to their clients and supporters, highlighting their interviewees and role in the work. By sharing the shoot day, resulting footage, and photography stills with UMC, their investment is maximized while saving time and energy. Both cuts will utilize much of the same photography and footage but will have two different narratives and priorities that resonate with distinct client and supporter bases.

Understanding The Story

Preparation for the shoot

Our team met with the UMC team and their project partners several times before the shoot to fully understand the story they wanted to tell and to explore all the filming opportunities on-site in Bellingham. We also assisted in identifying a roster of interviewees and tailored our questions to maximize the value of our limited time with each person on shoot day. This meticulous planning and close collaboration with both companies ensured we made the most of our shooting day.

From the rapidly developing Waterfront District to the tranquil shoreline of Lake Samish, our drone videographer and photographer, Ken, and Brand Strategist, Chloë, crisscrossed the city to capture the essence of Bellingham and the community set to benefit from the new utility project. Meanwhile, Brianna and Ron set up a studio at the Port of Bellingham offices, conducting interviews with Representative Alex Ramel and other key contributors from UMC and Corix. As a result, we crafted two distinct video cuts tailored to each client’s unique narrative.

The Impact

Bringing it all together

This video showcases the services our clients expect from a Hansen Belyea production: captivating storytelling, sweeping drone footage of the landscape and site, high-quality sound bites from interviews with key people, and imagery and music that enhance UMC’s incredible story with this project.

The UMC team posted the video to their LinkedIn page shortly after the final cut was completed, receiving a great reception. Their leadership team shared that they received very positive feedback on both the video and the project itself. This is the best kind of feedback, as it shows that the client’s customers and supporters were able to look beyond a 5 minute video and truly appreciate the story and impact of the project for the community it serves.
